Supervising Solicitor for Litigation Team-associate/senior associate level

The post will initially be largely home based and, in time, from the Glasgow office.

Alston Law is part of the Moray Legal Group and a leading debt recovery brand in Scotland. Clients include high street lenders,  commercial businesses, property and letting agencies and major motor finance providers.

We have a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious litigator with 5 years + PQE to join our growing litigation team as Supervising Solicitor at associate/senior associate level.

You will have significant experience of property litigation and debt recovery, strong client relationship skills, experience of supervising a team of paralegals and trainees and the ability and desire to develop and grow relationships with existing clients and help win new clients. You will also ideally have experience in acting for FCA authorised lender clients.

In this role you will:

  • Act as the main day to day point of contact for clients on a variety of matters but with a major focus on debt recovery and property litigation.
  • Build on existing client relationships and develop new ones.
  • Guide more junior members of the team and act as a mentor for them.
  • Contribute to thought leadership and to raise the profile of the firm externally.
  • Develop professionally and personally.

Required experience and skills for this role includes:

  • Strong experience of commercial litigation in Scotland, with particular experience of property litigation and debt recovery, ideally for lender clients and SMEs
  • Qualified in Scots law (Dual qualification in Scotland and England is desirable but not essential)
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to work with a significant degree of independence
  • Experience of managing a team of paralegals, lawyers and trainees

Remortgage Caseworker/Paralegal

At Simpson Marwick we have a large team of property lawyers, paralegals and caseworkers who deal with all aspects of conveyancing; including sales and purchases, re-mortgages, corrective conveyancing, first registrations and drafting lending documentation for lenders. We cover the whole of Scotland with offices in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

We have a number of opportunities in our growing Remortgage Department based in Glasgow. This small, friendly team carry out all conveyancing aspects of Remortgage transactions.

You will be required to:

  • Obtain and interpret instructions from lender clients and Borrowers
  • Examine and extract relevant title information from Search Reports in order to prepare Standard Security and Discharge documentation
  • Identify any title defect and highlight any potential risk to lender clients e.g. conveyancing, matrimonial & insolvency issues
  • Examine and process completed documentation ensuring they comply with legal requirements and that all relevant information has been provided  
  • Liaise with lenders in relation to obtaining Redemption Statements and Title Deeds
  • Examine Lease documentation and ensuring they comply with current legislation 
  • Process Mortgage Offers – having the ability to identify any special conditions
  • Examine Redemption Statements and identify any penalties (if applicable)
  • Calculate figures for completion and request loan funds from Lender
  • Complete transaction to include the processing of Finance documentation to redeem existing lender
  • Submit Standard Security/Discharge documentation for registration following completion


We are looking for someone with a minimum of 2 years experience of the Scottish Conveyancing process. A Conveyancing Paralegal Qualification is preferred but not essential. You should have Maths and English at a Higher/Nat 5 Level.

Applicants ideally should have experience of working with a case management system, and a good working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel. You are required to have great attention to detail in order to deliver excellent service to our clients. 

As most of our team are working from home for the moment, you must be able to prioritise your workload, using good time management practices and using your own initiative to meet strict deadlines. You should also be used to working as part of a team and have excellent written and verbal communication skills together with a polite telephone manner.

The role will involve:

Telephony: answering calls coming into our main phone lines, handling enquiries from the range of our clients and prospects in a professional manner.

Front of house duties: welcoming visitors and clients and managing the reception area and meeting rooms. 

Managing our digital channels: responding to social media messages, emails and monitoring social media channels.

Admin Support: Some general administrative tasks to assist back office professional services and office management.

You will have experience in a similar role in professional services, and ideally with organisations using new and emerging technology in the delivery of their services. You must also have good verbal communications skills and experience of dealing with a variety of people, from the general public, clients, other law firms and corporate partners.

Paralegal – Residential Property

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and ambitious team. You will be reporting to the Head of Conveyancing and Director in the Edinburgh team, and supporting them and the rest of the Edinburgh Residential Property Team.

In this role you will:

  • Assist with transactions and carry out all aspects of residential conveyancing with minimal supervision. This will include (but not restricted to): purchase; sale; remortgage; transfer of title.
  • Work autonomously and as part of a team providing support in a fast-paced, busy environment.
  • Identify and manage risk effectively. This includes (but not restricted to) Anti-Money Laundering, Source of Funds, and Source of Wealth requirements.
  • Provide assistance to clients and colleagues in the Estate Agency team on general conveyancing matters and transactions.


Our ideal candidate will have experience in residential property in a similar conveyancing role, preferably in Edinburgh, and experience of dealing with high net worth individuals. With strong organisational skills, you will have good technical knowledge and attention to detail and may have had some experience of using new and emerging technology in the delivery of legal services.

We will give preference to candidates holding the Law Society Accredited Paralegal Qualification.

Legal Cashier

We have an extremely exciting opportunity for an experienced Legal Cashier based in our Glasgow offices. This is a permanent fulltime position with the opportunity for the right candidate to develop their existing skill set and experience in a dynamic, busy environment.

Your duties will include:

  • Processing high volume CHAPS payments in line with company procedures
  • Banking client and office accounts
  • Processing invoices received to matter ledgers
  • Processing remittance advices for all supplier payments
  • Preparation of weekly/monthly billing in line with client requirements
  • Ensuring decisions on receipts and payments are in line with the Law Society, the firm, and client’s requirements
  • Liaising with fee earners and suppliers, maintaining a good working relationship inside and outside of the firm
  • Assisting with bank reconciliations
  • Providing timely information to other members of the Accounts team and the wider firm
  • Understanding and adhering to the Law Society of Scotland accounts rules

Essential requirements:

  • Previous legal accounts experience minimum of 2 years
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently to deadlines
  • Competent use of Microsoft Office applications including Excel and Word
  • Ability to work under pressure
